Those Harley riders who find it too cold to take their hogs out on the frigid, winter roads will have to tend to their bikes in order to get the best performance out of them come spring time. Don't worry, there are just a few quick and easy steps that all Harley owners can take to have their bikes cruising at top performance in the warmer weather. Also, if you brave the cold temperatures of January and continue to ride, performing these tasks will make your winter rides even smoother, totally negating much of the risk of damaging the bike.
Fuel Stabilizing
Unfortunately, unleaded fuel was not designed to last forever, and after just a few weeks, the chemical makeup of the gas will start to break down. While some bike owners drain their fuel, it is close to impossible to drain every last drop of fuel from the system. Thus, it is best to add some fuel stabilizer to the mix in order to stop the oxidation and build-up of the old fuel. After this, run the engine for around 15 minutes to get the stabilizer into the bike´s system.
Time to Change the Oil
After you have added the fuel stabilizer, go ahead and replace the oil filter and oil in your engine. We recommend K&N filters and Bel Ray oil. You don´t want your Harley engine to get clogged up with chunky oil, potentially damaging your system. Synthetic oil will typically provide the best results, and your bike will be ready for action in the next riding season.
